About the Department

İstanbul 29 Mayıs University English Language Teaching (ELT) program will begin its education activities as of the 2020-2021 academic year. The program was prepared in accordance with international standards and the accreditation criteria of the Higher Education Council. The program consists of courses related to general knowledge, pedagogical formation, and subject matter knowledge such as linguistics, language acquisition, and foreign language teaching methods for the development of teacher candidates’ English. It aims to equip teacher candidates with the necessary skills to teach English as a foreign language. Elective courses within the program provide the opportunity for students to develop themselves in cultural and professional areas.

Our department aims to educate young teachers and researchers with the necessary knowledge of the basic theories and methods of different theoretical approaches within the scope of Foreign Languages Education and to enable students to implement them efficiently using the necessary background to conduct scientific research in this field and to develop critical and scientific approaches to different languages, cultures, and education systems.

Undergraduate courses prepared in light of an up-to-date curriculum based on the needs of our globalizing, multilingual, and multicultural world are given by academic staff specializing in various sub-fields of Foreign Languages Education such as educational sciences, educational technologies, linguistics, language acquisition theories, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and Western literature. The academic staff also has the necessary technical knowledge and equipment for distance education.

Our university has ERASMUS student and academic staff exchange agreements with many universities abroad. These bilateral agreements offer the chance for students to observe and improve themselves in their professional fields.

The duration of education at İstanbul 29 Mayıs University English Language Teaching program is 4 years, and the courses are conducted both theoretically and practically. 240 ECTS credits and a grade point average of 2.00/4.00 are required in order to complete the program successfully.

As the medium of program instruction is both English and Turkish, there is one year of preparatory language education. Students who pass the proficiency exam can enroll in the undergraduate program.
